Link has barely left Kokiri Forest, and Nintendo already sounds pleased with his latest outing. President Shuntaro Furukawa says The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has made a very good sales start.
He isn’t putting a number on it yet. Speaking during Nintendo’s 6 November financial results and management policy briefing, Furukawa said the game had only just been released, making it too early to share specific figures.
In Nintendo’s Japanese Q&A summary, he described Ocarina of Time as having made “a very good start”, in translation. The comment came in response to a question about Switch 2 sales following price increases and whether Nintendo could meet its annual hardware target.
That context gives the remake’s opening a little more weight. Nintendo is looking towards the year-end shopping season, when a strong software release can give people another reason to pick up a console. Furukawa said the early response to Zelda left the company in a good position heading into that period.
The game isn’t the only Zelda product helping set that mood. Furukawa also said the special Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, released the previous week, had attracted a substantial response and was selling steadily across regions.
Elsewhere in his answer, he explained that Switch 2 sales in Japan had settled after demand brought forward by the price increase. Outside Japan, Nintendo had seen less of a difference around the change, following a longer announcement period and measures including software bundles.
Even with Zelda’s encouraging opening, Furukawa stressed that the next few weeks would be important to reaching Nintendo’s sales plan. The holiday period has a major influence on its annual hardware shipments.
For now, the takeaway is straightforward: Nintendo likes what it’s seeing from Ocarina of Time. We’ll have to wait for an actual total before we know how big Link’s return has been.
