Two little letters have sent Zelda fans digging through a whole new rabbit hole: “MQ.”
They appeared next to Dodongo’s Cavern in the Nintendo Switch 2 files for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, according to dataminer MrCheeze. For anyone who spent time with the GameCube or Nintendo 3DS versions, the abbreviation has an obvious meaning: Master Quest, the alternate take on the adventure that reshuffles its dungeons and asks players to rethink rooms they thought they knew by heart.
On its own, that would be a fun bit of file archaeology. Developers leave unused names and unfinished ideas behind all the time. Then the trail got more interesting.
More Than A Stray “MQ”
Reporting from Nintendo Life and Nintendo Everything points to strings in the executable called HasMQ, IsMQModeExist, NewGameMQ, and ReleaseMQ. Those labels still do not amount to an announcement, but together they make Master Quest look less like a random leftover.
OatmealDome’s deeper look is the part turning heads. In a post about the data, they said Master Quest appears to check whether the player owns DLC, rather than simply waiting for a standard game update. They also described incomplete data that already seems to include a mirrored world and changed dungeons. Yes, that apparently includes cows in Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Master Quest has always enjoyed making Hyrule feel a little wrong in the best possible way.
The Missing Piece
Master Quest was not included with the new Switch 2 release, even though it has been part of past versions of Ocarina of Time. That makes these references especially tempting: they hint at a version of the mode that could be sold or unlocked later, with enough structural changes to feel like more than a difficulty toggle.
But the key word is “could.” Nintendo has confirmed that the new Switch 2 version launched on November 5; it has not announced Master Quest, DLC, or any update plans. The files are a clue, not a release schedule.
Still, this is a much juicier clue than a single unused label. If Nintendo does have something planned for the new Ocarina of Time, dataminers may have just found the first loose thread.
