Moore’s Law Is Dead claims he has “a literal document” that indicates that production of the PlayStation 6 will start in mid-2027.
It feels like this generation of consoles is just getting off the ground and the industry is abuzz with news about the next. As Sony revs up the hype machine on its in-development successor to the PlayStation 5, I’ll be keeping close track of the rumors and confirmed information about the new generation.

When is the PlayStation 6 coming out?Moore’s La
Sony hasn’t made an official statement about when its new console is coming out.
However, in a NeoGAF thread about Project Amethyst and Sony-AMD hardware collaboration, notable leaker KeplerL2 stated in no uncertain terms that the PlayStation 6 will come out in 2027.
In a YouTube video posted by Moore’s Law Is Dead on October 13, 2025, the content creator claimed that manufacturing of the PlayStation 6 is set to begin in mid-2027.
“I have a literal document showing when they manufacture these and it is in middle or to even early 2027, and that’s exactly when they manufacture the PS6.”
Based on launch date history, we can expect a probable release window of somewhere around November—just in time for the holidays.
Is the PlayStation 6 confirmed?
Currently, Sony has not confirmed that a PlayStation 6 is in the works, though numerous insider leaks have claimed that it’s in active development.
Strengthening these rumors is the fact that Sony’s tech wizard, Mark Cerny, was recently spoken in public about the future of Sony’s hardware. Considering Sony likes to have him make the rounds when they’ve got a new console in the works, this is a fairly reliable sign that the PlayStation 6 is real.
What will the PlayStation 6 look like?
So far, no clue at all. Currently, no official images exist of the PlayStation 6, and the rumors and leaks circulating at the moment are all talking about the console’s internal hardware, rather than its design.
Is the PlayStation 6 a handheld?
Again, no official word from Sony—they haven’t even officially announced the console is being developed. However, a Bloomberg report from 2024 claims that Sony’s PS5 successor will be a handheld.
Will the PlayStation 6 be backwards compatible?
No official statement on this (obviously). None of the rumors or leaks talk about backwards compatibility.
If the rumors about the PlayStation 6 being a handheld are true, then we can fairly safely assume there will be no disc drive. In such a case, any backwards compatibility the device offers would be entirely digital.
What we may get is a host of upgrades, similar to the graphics and performance upgrades Switch games get when moving over to the Switch 2. Considering how successful remasters and remakes have been this generation, you can probably expect that to continue into the next generation.
Will the PlayStation 6 have Steam?
Not likely. Other than the new form factor, this is still a Sony console at heart, meaning it will very likely be driven by a proprietary Sony operating system. Historically, PlayStation consoles don’t support PC applications like Steam.
