Nintendo has announced that it has run out of parts inventory for the New Nintendo 2DS. Subsequently, the company is shutting down its repair services for all 2DS models as of September 4.

Nintendo hasn’t produced parts for the 2DS or 3DS parts since 2020, when it permanently halted fabrication of new inventory. Years ago I was in a situation where I could only game on my GameBoy Advance, so I can empathize with 2DS owners’ concerns about the ability to refurbish and repair their devices. While most shops can fix the electronics in your handheld, there isn’t much they can do about a broken screen or missing buttons if the parts aren’t available.
We’re bound to see boutique makers rush to fill in the space that Nintendo is leaving behind. Until then, you might want to secure a backup battery sooner rather than later.
