Roblox to Require Age Checks for All In-game Communication

Age estimation will affect all Roblox users by the end of 2025.

Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman posted a statement detailing the firm’s plans to expand age estimation to all Roblox users who use in-game communication tools by the end of 2025. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure age-appropriate access to certain content and restrict communication between adults and minors:

“With this information, we’ll also launch new systems designed to limit communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in the real world.”

Kaufman expects other online platforms to adopt this approach to strengthen child safety:

“We’re taking this step as part of our long-term vision as a platform for all ages. We expect that our approach to communication safety will become best practice for other online platforms, whether lawmakers pass laws requiring age verification for all platforms in the future or not.”

With more than 380 million registered players, Roblox is the largest game in the world. As of last December, about 40% of Roblox’s audience is under 13 years old, leading to concerns about child safety on the platform. Earlier this year, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki addressed these concerns directly:

“My first message would be if you’re not comfortable, don’t let your kids be on Roblox.”
