Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry’s highly anticipated follow up to 2017’s Hollow Knight, was released this Thursday to massive demand. According to SteamDB, more than 100,000 players were playing the game on Steam within 30 minutes of its release. The sudden influx of players caused Steam’s store to crash and Nintendo was forced to take their store offline for emergency maintenance. Meanwhile, players on Xbox and PlayStation reportedly were unable to buy the game for several hours.
Silksong was first announced in 2019 with a planned release in 2023. Long periods passed without new information from the devs, leading to speculation about whether the game would make its estimated launch window. In 2023, Team Cherry announced that Silksong would be definitely indefinitely, assuring fans that the game was not canceled. The game then made a surprise appearance at this year’s Gamecom, where a fixed release date was finally announced.
Anticipation for Silksong has been high in the weeks since its Gamescom presentation, leading many indie developers to push the release dates of their own games to avoid competing with it.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is out PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PCs. The game is also available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
