Helldivers 2 has had an impressive Xbox launch week. PlayStation’s viral PvE squad shooter released on Microsoft game consoles August 26 and has already sold an estimated 926k copies according to an Alinea Analytics report. That figure puts the game just outside of the month’s top 10 most sold games in only six days. Helldivers 2 sold 633k copies in its first week after launching on PlayStation 5 in February 2024.
The Sony first-party title releasing on a rival console is part of a wider industry trend away from platform exclusivity. The Japanese conglomerate was the first of the Big Three to take its in-house exclusives to other platforms, starting with the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Spider-Man Remastered on PC in 2022. So far, Helldivers 2 is the first game published by Sony to release on a Microsoft console.
Microsoft also turned heads last February when it announced plans to bring its first-party games to Sony consoles, starting with Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded. Gears of War: Reloaded, the remaster of Microsoft’s seminal peakaboo shooter also released on the same day as Helldivers 2 for both Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
