Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Finally Gets New Game+, And Its Designer Says The Work Went Surprisingly Smoothly

Ubisoft’s new Valhalla interview offers an unexpected contrast with its 2022 decision to rule out New Game+.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has finally opened the door to another adventure with your endgame Eivor. The amusing part? After Ubisoft ruled out New Game+ in 2022, the designer behind its newly released update says the work went remarkably smoothly.

Speaking in a Ubisoft interview on Xbox Wire, lead game designer David Larouche says the team brought together developers who already knew how to add New Game+ to existing games. There were no major implementation problems that left them stuck.

That makes an interesting companion to Ubisoft’s old farewell to Valhalla’s post-launch support. In November 2022, the company explained that the game’s unusual structure offered too few ways to make replaying it feel rewarding. New Game+ was off the table, and The Last Chapter was presented as the final content update.

Nearly four years later, that farewell has acquired a fairly substantial footnote. The Most Requested Update is free and available now, with New Game+ unlocking after the Holy Day quest. You can take your developed character through the adventure again, while repeated runs increase the challenge.

The team’s answer to the old replayability problem includes more room to grow. An optional progression system counts equipment upgrades, runes and masteries towards your power. Mithril helps upgrade divine gear, and repeated discoveries can now feed that progression instead of simply giving you something you already have.

Larouche says the chance to deliver the long-requested feature was something the team wanted to pursue. The new interview doesn’t give a full account of what changed inside Ubisoft between the 2022 decision and this update, but it does explain why this version offers more than a straightforward story restart.

PS5 Pro players also get a visual refresh. According to Ubisoft’s PlayStation Blog interview, upgraded PSSR brings sharper imagery and a 60fps Quality mode. That enhancement is specific to PS5 Pro; the broader update is also confirmed for PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

If you’ve been keeping an endgame Eivor around for one more trip through England, there’s finally somewhere to take them.
